About this skill
Two-digit numbers need two careful strokes side by side. Remind children that the 1 always comes first, and that the digits should sit on the line and be about the same height.
How to teach it
- Say each number aloud while tracing it and count with real objects alongside the sheet.
- Keep sessions to five or ten minutes and stop while the child still wants more.
- Use the answer key to check, then praise effort rather than speed.
Mistakes to watch for
- Writing digits backwards or from the bottom up — model the starting point and the direction of each stroke.
- Counting a ten frame without touching each counter, which causes skipped or double-counted items.
