Measuring the real world

Measurement links numbers to the real world. Children begin by comparing lengths directly (longer, shorter), then measure with non-standard units such as paper clips, and finally use rulers in centimetres or inches. The key idea is that a unit must be the same size each time, and the zero on the ruler marks the start.

Most of the world uses the metric system (millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres; grams and kilograms; millilitres and litres) while the US also uses customary units (inches, feet, pounds, gallons). These worksheets include both, so they are useful wherever you live. The metric system is easy to convert, because every step is a power of ten.

Questions parents ask

Should my child learn metric or customary units?

Learn the system used in your country first, then the other. The metric system is used almost everywhere and is also standard in science.

How do I read a ruler properly?

Line the left end of the object with zero (not the edge of the ruler) and read where the other end lands. Count the small marks if it falls between numbers.
