Hearing the sounds in words
Before children can read, they must hear that words are made of sounds. This is called phonemic awareness and it is one of the strongest predictors of reading success. Rhyming, clapping syllables, and spotting the first and last sounds in words are all good practice and can be done anywhere — in the car, in the kitchen, on a walk.
The sheets here use pictures so that children focus on sounds rather than spelling. Always say the word slowly, stretching it out: s-u-n.
Questions parents ask
What is phonemic awareness?
The ability to hear and play with the individual sounds in spoken words. It is a spoken skill and does not need letters.
My child cannot hear rhymes. What should I do?
Sing rhyming songs and read rhyming books daily. Many children need months of exposure before rhymes click.
