Because…
A cause is why something happens; an effect is what happens as a result. Signal words such as because, so, since, therefore and as a result help, but many causes are only implied. Young children can start with everyday chains: it rained, so the grass grew; the glass slipped, so it broke.
A simple way to practise is to ask two questions of any event: ‘What happened?’ (the effect) and ‘Why did it happen?’ (the cause). Cause and effect underpins science, history and good storytelling.
Questions parents ask
How do I help my child with cause & effect?
Practise with short passages, ask 'how do you know?' after each answer, and have them point to the evidence in the text.
Which grades is this for?
Mostly Grade 1 to Grade 4, though stronger readers can try harder sheets and others can use easier ones.
