Repeated multiplication in shorthand
An exponent (or power) tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself: 25 means 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. Squares (a number multiplied by itself) and cubes are the most common, and appear in area and volume. A square root undoes a square: since 72 = 49, the square root of 49 is 7.
Powers of ten are especially important because they underpin place value and scientific notation. 103 is 1,000 — one followed by three zeros.
Questions parents ask
What does 5³ mean?
5 × 5 × 5 = 125. The 3 shows how many times 5 is used as a factor, not how many times it is added.
What is 0 to the power of 0?
It is usually treated as 1 in algebra and combinatorics, but it is left undefined in some contexts. Primary school work avoids it.
