Making sense of data
Data handling helps children turn information into answers. They begin by sorting objects and making tally charts, then draw and read pictographs and bar graphs, and finally calculate averages. The key skills are reading the title, labels and scale before answering any question.
Mean, median, mode and range summarise a set of numbers: the mean is the fair share, the median the middle, the mode the most common and the range the spread. Collecting real data — favourite fruit in the family, pets in the street, daily temperature — makes the sheets far more engaging.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
Mean: add all values and divide by how many. Median: the middle value when ordered. Mode: the most frequent value.
What should my child check before reading a graph?
The title, the labels on each axis and the scale (what each square or symbol is worth).
