Fables and their morals
A fable is a short story, usually with animal characters, that teaches a lesson. Fables are found in nearly every culture — from India's Panchatantra to Africa's trickster tales, from ancient Greece to China. The moral comes at the end, and good readers learn to state it in their own words and to find the evidence for it in the story.
The fables on this page are new stories written for this site, inspired by the form rather than copied from any collection. Each comes with questions on characters, problem, solution and moral, and each is a good springboard for a family conversation about honesty, patience, kindness and teamwork.
Questions parents ask
What is a moral?
The lesson a story teaches. In a fable it is often stated at the end.
Why do fables use animals?
Animals let storytellers show human strengths and weaknesses — pride, kindness, greed — without pointing a finger at real people.
