Shapes & Geometry Worksheets

Name 2D shapes and 3D solids, count sides and corners and classify angles.

Seeing shapes in the world

Geometry begins with recognising shapes in everyday things: a clock is a circle, a book a rectangle, a dice a cube. Young children sort shapes by looking at sides, corners and curves, then learn the names. Later they meet three-dimensional solids (cube, sphere, cone, cylinder, pyramid, prism) with faces, edges and vertices, and learn to measure and classify angles.

A shape hunt around the home or classroom is a great way to start. Ask your child to find a circle, a rectangle, a triangle and a cube, and say what makes each one special.

Questions parents ask

What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?

2D shapes are flat (a square, a circle). 3D shapes take up space (a cube, a sphere).

What are acute, right and obtuse angles?

Acute angles are smaller than 90°, right angles are exactly 90°, and obtuse angles are between 90° and 180°.
