Fact vs. Opinion Worksheets

Tell the difference between what can be proved and what someone thinks.

Worksheets

Can it be proved?

A fact can be checked and proved true or false (Paris is the capital of France). An opinion is what someone thinks or feels, and different people can disagree (Paris is the nicest city in Europe). Opinion words — best, worst, beautiful, boring, should, I think — are clues.

This skill underpins media literacy: the ability to separate evidence from persuasion in advertisements, news and social media. A good question to ask is ‘How could I prove that?’

Questions parents ask

How do I help my child with fact vs. opinion?

Practise with short passages, ask 'how do you know?' after each answer, and have them point to the evidence in the text.

Which grades is this for?

Mostly Grade 2 to Grade 5, though stronger readers can try harder sheets and others can use easier ones.
