Worksheets
Algebra starts with patterns
Algebra is just arithmetic with a letter in place of an unknown number. Children first meet it through patterns (what comes next?), then rule tables ('in' and 'out' machines), and finally equations like x + 7 = 15, where the letter stands for a number to be found. The central idea is balance: whatever you do to one side of an equation, you do to the other.
Check every solution by substituting it back: if x = 8, then 8 + 7 = 15 is true. This habit catches errors and builds understanding.
Questions parents ask
What is a variable?
A letter that stands for a number, such as x or n.
How do I solve x + 7 = 15?
Subtract 7 from both sides: x = 8. Always check by substituting.
