Area & Perimeter Worksheets
Perimeter around shapes, area by counting squares, area of rectangles and triangles.
Worksheets
Around and inside
Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape; area is the amount of flat space inside. Children often confuse the two, so teach them side by side. A good way to remember: perimeter is the fence, area is the lawn. Count squares on a grid first, then see that for a rectangle, counting the squares in each row and multiplying gives the same answer as length × width.
From there, triangles are half a rectangle: area = ½ × base × height. These ideas open the door to composite shapes, volume and surface area in later years.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between area and perimeter?
Perimeter is the distance around a shape (a length, measured in cm or m). Area is the space inside (measured in square units: cm² or m²).
Why is the area of a triangle half of base × height?
Any triangle can be doubled into a parallelogram or rectangle with the same base and height.
