Fiction vs. Nonfiction Worksheets
Tell stories from facts and learn how each type of text works.

Made-up or real?
Fiction is invented: characters, events and dialogue come from an author's imagination. Nonfiction tells about real people, places and events, or explains real facts. Fiction has a plot with a problem and solution; nonfiction is often organised by topic with headings, photographs and captions.
Children enjoy sorting sentences and passages into the two groups. Look out for clues: talking animals and magic point to fiction, while dates, numbers and real names point to nonfiction. Historical fiction mixes both, which makes a good talking point for older children.
Questions parents ask
How do I help my child with fiction vs. nonfiction?
Practise with short passages, ask 'how do you know?' after each answer, and have them point to the evidence in the text.
Which grades is this for?
Mostly Grade 1 to Grade 3, though stronger readers can try harder sheets and others can use easier ones.
