Sentences & Passages Worksheets
Practise reading connected text: short sentences first, then short passages with questions.
From words to connected reading
Once children can decode simple words, the next step is reading them in sentences, then in short passages. Fluency — reading smoothly with expression — is the bridge between decoding and comprehension. Re-reading the same short text two or three times is one of the best ways to build it.
These pages use short, decodable sentences and brief passages so beginners can succeed. Ask your child to read aloud, praise effort, and stop to talk about what each sentence means.
Questions parents ask
How can I improve my child's reading fluency?
Re-read short texts several times, read together (echo reading), and have fun with expression and punctuation.
