Why short stories work
A good short story gives a child a complete experience in a few minutes: characters, a problem, a turning point and a satisfying end. That is exactly what comprehension questions need to test. Our stories are written for this site — they are not copied from anywhere — and they are set in different places (a night market, a mango orchard, a river village, a city rooftop) so readers everywhere can recognise something of their own world.
Read the story together first if your child is still building confidence, then let them tackle the questions alone. Talking about what happens next, and why a character acted as they did, deepens understanding more than any worksheet.
Questions parents ask
How should I use a story worksheet?
Read the story once for enjoyment, a second time slowly, then answer the questions. Encourage children to go back to the text for evidence.
Are these stories original?
Yes. Every story on this site was written for this site and is free to print for home or classroom use.
