Phonics: connecting sounds to letters
Phonics teaches the relationship between the sounds of spoken language and the letters that represent them. A typical sequence starts with single letter sounds, moves to short-vowel CVC words (cat, sun, pig), then to consonant blends (stop, frog), digraphs (ship, chat, thin), long vowels and silent e (cake, bike) and finally vowel teams (rain, boat, tree). Systematic phonics is the approach recommended by most reading research.
Blend slowly and let the child say each sound before the word. Keep sessions short and playful, and re-read decodable words in sentences so that skills transfer to real reading. Pair these sheets with the sight-word pages, which cover the words that can't be sounded out.
Questions parents ask
What is a CVC word?
A word with a consonant, a vowel and a consonant that follows the sound: cat, dog, sun, pen.
What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?
In a blend (st, bl, gr) you hear both consonant sounds. In a digraph (sh, ch, th) two letters make one new sound.
