Sequencing Worksheets

Put events in the right order.

Worksheets

First, next, last

Sequencing means knowing what happens first, next and last. It helps children retell a story, follow instructions and understand a process. Signal words — first, next, then, after, finally — are the main clues, but sometimes the order has to be worked out from meaning (you must crack an egg before you fry it).

Start with everyday routines such as brushing teeth or planting a seed, then move to short stories, and finally to longer texts where events are out of order or flash back.

Questions parents ask

How do I help my child with sequencing?

Practise with short passages, ask 'how do you know?' after each answer, and have them point to the evidence in the text.

Which grades is this for?

Mostly Kindergarten to Grade 3, though stronger readers can try harder sheets and others can use easier ones.
