Leveled Stories Worksheets

Stories that grow in length and difficulty, from simple sentences to chapter-style passages.

Worksheets

Moving up one level at a time

Leveled stories let a child practise at the right difficulty: a level where they can read most words correctly but still have to think. Level 1 uses short sentences and common words; each level adds longer sentences, more varied vocabulary and more complex ideas. If a child reads a page with more than one error in twenty words, move down a level; if they read it easily, move up.

The levels here are our own and are written to match grades K to 5 broadly. Different countries use different level schemes (guided reading letters, Lexile, book bands), so the grade labels give a rough guide only.

Questions parents ask

How do I know which level to choose?

Pick a story where your child can read at least 19 of every 20 words. If it feels hard, go down a level; if it feels easy, go up.

Do these match guided reading levels?

Not exactly. The levels are approximate. Use them alongside your school's own reading level system.
