For three weeks, Aiden had been working on his science fair project: a model volcano that would erupt with baking soda and vinegar. He had painted it carefully, adding tiny trees and a river of red clay.
On the morning of the fair, he carried it into the hall. A teacher asked, “Is that the same volcano as everyone else's?” Aiden looked around. Four other tables had volcanoes too.
His stomach dropped. Then he had an idea. Instead of only showing the eruption, he set up a card explaining how different amounts of vinegar changed the height of the foam. He measured each one and drew a chart.
The judges stopped at his table longer than at any other. “You didn't just make a volcano,” one said. “You asked a question and tested it.” Aiden walked home with a ribbon and a new understanding of what science really is.
