Putting the clues together
A conclusion is a judgement reached after thinking about all the evidence in a text. It differs from inference in that it usually combines several clues into a larger picture — for instance, deciding that a character is a gardener after reading about her gloves, her muddy boots and her watering can.
Encourage children to look for at least two clues before drawing a conclusion, and to check that their conclusion would still make sense if new information appeared.
Questions parents ask
How do I help my child with drawing conclusions?
Practise with short passages, ask 'how do you know?' after each answer, and have them point to the evidence in the text.
Which grades is this for?
Mostly Grade 3 to Grade 5, though stronger readers can try harder sheets and others can use easier ones.
