About this skill
A ten frame is a two-by-five grid that shows numbers as pictures of five and ten. Children who learn to see 'one more than five' or 'two less than ten' at a glance find addition and subtraction far easier later.
How to teach it
- Say each number aloud while tracing it and count with real objects alongside the sheet.
- Keep sessions to five or ten minutes and stop while the child still wants more.

Mistakes to watch for
- Writing digits backwards or from the bottom up — model the starting point and the direction of each stroke.
- Counting a ten frame without touching each counter, which causes skipped or double-counted items.
