About this skill
Tracing builds the muscle memory behind neat handwriting. Each sheet shows the digit in dotted outline so children learn where to start and which way the pencil travels before they write on their own.
How to teach it
- Say each number aloud while tracing it and count with real objects alongside the sheet.
- Keep sessions to five or ten minutes and stop while the child still wants more.
- Use the answer key to check, then praise effort rather than speed.
Mistakes to watch for
- Writing digits backwards or from the bottom up — model the starting point and the direction of each stroke.
- Counting a ten frame without touching each counter, which causes skipped or double-counted items.
