About this skill
Understanding that 14 means one ten and four ones is the foundation of place value. These sheets use a ten-plus-ones view of each teen number so the idea is clear before children meet bigger numbers.
How to teach it
- Say each number aloud while tracing it and count with real objects alongside the sheet.
- Keep sessions to five or ten minutes and stop while the child still wants more.
- Use the answer key to check, then praise effort rather than speed.
Mistakes to watch for
- Writing digits backwards or from the bottom up — model the starting point and the direction of each stroke.
- Counting a ten frame without touching each counter, which causes skipped or double-counted items.
