About this skill
Fact family triangles remind children that three numbers, two additions and two subtractions all belong together.
How to teach it
- Show borrowing with base-ten blocks before teaching the written method.
- Check every answer by adding it to the number subtracted.
- Teach the three meanings: take away, difference and missing part.
Mistakes to watch for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger regardless of position (in 52 − 27 writing 35).
- Forgetting to reduce the next column after borrowing.
