Single-Digit Subtraction Worksheets
Subtraction facts lag behind addition facts by months in most children, and the reason is usually that they were taught as a separate set to memorize rather than as addition read backwards. A child who knows 6 + 8 = 14 already knows 14 − 8.

What to watch for when you grade this sheet
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger regardless of order (reading 4 − 9 as 5).
- Counting down one at a time, which is slow and error-prone past three.
- Confusing the minus sign with a plus when working quickly.
One thing that helps
For each subtraction the child finds hard, ask for the matching addition fact. Linking the pair is faster than drilling the subtraction alone.
