About this skill
A fact family shows that addition and subtraction are two sides of the same relationship: 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 − 3 = 4 and 7 − 4 = 3.
How to teach it
- Teach strategies — counting on, doubles, making ten — alongside the facts.
- Use counters or coins for new ideas before moving to the page.
- Check the ones column first, then the tens, and always write carried numbers small.
Mistakes to watch for
- Forgetting to add the carried number into the next column.
- Starting a column sum from the left instead of the right.
