About this skill
This is the very first picture of place value. Children count the long bars as tens and the little squares as ones, and learn that 10 ones can be swapped for 1 ten.
How to teach it
- Use base-ten blocks or bundled sticks to build numbers physically.
- Read numbers aloud with 'hundred' and 'thousand' so the structure is audible.
- Keep a place-value chart on the table for reference.
Mistakes to watch for
- Confusing the digit with its value (the 5 in 352 is worth 50, not 5).
- Dropping zeros in expanded form, for example writing 300 + 2 for 352.
