About this skill
Underlining a digit directs attention to a single place. Children say the digit, then the place, then the value: '4, tens, forty'.
How to teach it
- Use base-ten blocks or bundled sticks to build numbers physically.
- Read numbers aloud with 'hundred' and 'thousand' so the structure is audible.
- Keep a place-value chart on the table for reference.
Mistakes to watch for
- Confusing the digit with its value (the 5 in 352 is worth 50, not 5).
- Dropping zeros in expanded form, for example writing 300 + 2 for 352.
