About this skill
Halves, thirds and quarters are the first fractions children meet. Cutting real shapes (paper, fruit) helps.
How to teach it
- Always use pictures or number lines before symbols.
- Fold paper strips to show equivalent fractions.
- Remind children that a bigger denominator means smaller pieces.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding denominators as well as numerators (1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5).
- Thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4.
