About this skill
Singing the alphabet song helps, but writing the letters in order shows whether a child can really place each one.
How to teach it
- Keep each session to ten minutes.
- Say the letter or word aloud as the child writes.
- Praise effort and let them colour the page afterwards.
Mistakes to watch for
- Pressing too hard or gripping the pencil in a fist — practise with chunky crayons first.
- Starting letters from the bottom instead of the top.
