Why Owls Turn Their Heads — Reading Comprehension

An original grade 3 passage with 6 questions that move from literal recall through inference to vocabulary. A comprehension sheet made only of recall questions tests memory rather than understanding, so the later questions here deliberately cannot be answered by copying a line out of the text.

Why Owls Turn Their Heads — Reading Comprehension

Name:Date:Score:

  1. Why Owls Turn Their Heads

An owl cannot move its eyes. Human eyes roll in their sockets, but an owl's eyes are fixed in place, shaped more like tubes than balls. That shape lets an owl gather a great deal of light, which is useful at night, but it means the owl must move its whole head to look at anything.

To make up for this, an owl has fourteen bones in its neck. A human has seven. Those extra bones let an owl turn its head about 270 degrees — three quarters of a full circle — without moving its body at all.

Turning that far would cut off the blood supply in most animals. An owl's arteries are wider than the channels they run through, leaving room for blood to keep flowing even when the neck is twisted.

  2. 1Why can an owl not move its eyes?
  3. 2What is the advantage of that eye shape?
  4. 3How many neck bones does an owl have compared with a human?
  5. 4Why does turning its head that far not harm the owl?
  6. 5The passage says an owl turns its head 'about 270 degrees'. What fraction of a circle is that?
  7. 6Explain in your own words why an owl needs a flexible neck.

One thing that helps

Ask the child to underline the part of the passage their answer came from. For the inference questions there will be no single line to underline, and noticing that is the lesson.
