Look at the tens digit to decide. The pitfall is numbers such as 951, where the hundreds digit rolls over from 9 to 10.
How to teach it
- Draw a quick number line for each question until the rule is automatic.
- Underline the rounding place, then circle the digit to its right.
- Always do a quick estimate to check a calculation.
Mistakes to watch for
- Changing the digit to the right instead of the digit in the rounding place.
- Forgetting to carry (rounding 396 to the nearest ten gives 400, not 390).
