Start with a number line from 40 to 50 and ask which end the number is closer to. Soon the rule — 5 or more, round up — becomes automatic.
How to teach it
- Draw a quick number line for each question until the rule is automatic.
- Underline the rounding place, then circle the digit to its right.
- Always do a quick estimate to check a calculation.
Mistakes to watch for
- Changing the digit to the right instead of the digit in the rounding place.
- Forgetting to carry (rounding 396 to the nearest ten gives 400, not 390).
