About this skill
Each time you multiply by ten, every digit moves one place to the left. This is place value in action, not a trick of adding zeros.
How to teach it
- Teach arrays and equal groups first so the tables have meaning.
- Practise a little every day; five minutes beats a weekly hour.
- Use the commutative property: 6 × 8 is the same as 8 × 6.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding instead of multiplying (3 × 4 = 7).
- Misplacing zeros when multiplying by 10, 100 or 1,000.
