Making Change Worksheets
Making change is subtraction with a built-in check, because the answer has to be a sensible amount of money. It is also one of the few primary math skills a child will use that same week, which does a lot for motivation.

What to watch for when you grade this sheet
- Subtracting cents from dollars without converting.
- Counting up to the wrong round amount.
- Giving change larger than the amount paid and not noticing.
One thing that helps
Teach counting up, not subtracting: from $3.65 to $5 is thirty-five cents then one dollar thirty-five. It is what cashiers do and it avoids borrowing.
