About this skill
Threes and fours are the first skip-counting patterns that do not show an obvious pattern in the last digit, so children rely on rhythm and recall. They are excellent preparation for the three times table.
How to teach it
- Let children touch or tick every object as they count it.
- Chant skip counting aloud while clapping or stepping, then write it.
- Count up and back down — going backwards is a different skill.
Mistakes to watch for
- Counting an object twice or missing one — use a pencil to cross off each item.
- Skipping a number in the decade change (for example 39, 50 instead of 39, 40).
