About this skill
Counting by twos is the same as finding even numbers and the basis for the two times table. Notice that every number in the pattern ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
How to teach it
- Let children touch or tick every object as they count it.
- Chant skip counting aloud while clapping or stepping, then write it.
- Count up and back down — going backwards is a different skill.
Mistakes to watch for
- Counting an object twice or missing one — use a pencil to cross off each item.
- Skipping a number in the decade change (for example 39, 50 instead of 39, 40).
