Teaching spelling by pattern
English spelling looks chaotic, but about 80% of words follow patterns. Teaching those patterns — short vowels, long vowels, plurals, prefixes, suffixes and roots — works much better than memorising random lists. Each list here focuses on one pattern, so children learn the idea as well as the words.
Note that some words are spelt differently in British, Australian, Canadian and American English (colour/color, analyse/analyze). We have used words that are the same in all of them, so the lists work worldwide.
Questions parents ask
How many spelling words per week?
Ten is a good number for most primary children; fewer for grade 1.
Do the lists follow a curriculum?
They follow common patterns taught across many curricula, but you can use them in any order.
