Each word here has roughly a third of its letters removed, with those letters listed alongside in alphabetical order. That hint turns the task from recall into reasoning about where each sound belongs — which is more useful at this stage than being able to produce the word cold.

What to watch for when you grade this sheet
- Filling a vowel where a consonant belongs, or the reverse.
- Using a hint letter twice and leaving another unused.
- Producing a real word that is not the target word, which the hint letters will usually rule out if the child checks.
One thing that helps
Have the child read the word aloud with the gaps as pauses. Hearing where the sound is missing is far more reliable than looking for it.
