Elapsed Time Worksheets
Elapsed time is the first place children meet base-60 arithmetic, and the instinct to treat it as base ten is strong. 2:45 to 3:20 is thirty-five minutes, not seventy-five, and working out why is the lesson.

What to watch for when you grade this sheet
- Subtracting the times as if they were decimals.
- Borrowing ten instead of sixty when the minutes do not subtract.
- Losing an hour when the interval crosses twelve o'clock.
One thing that helps
Count up through the next whole hour rather than subtracting: 2:45 to 3:00 is fifteen, then 3:00 to 3:20 is twenty, so thirty-five. It avoids base-60 borrowing entirely.
